5 HTP is a precursor to serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, which tells our brain to feel happy and content. 5 HTP is also used to help with the quality of sleep and may help with depression. There is no doubt that when a person has lower serotonin levels, it can create cravings for foods high in sugar. People who use 5 HTP may notice that it will curb the cravings for sweets which in turn may help with those who are trying to lose weight, but the main reason people use this supplement is to help with the quality and duration of sleep. Many people may not know this, but a good night sleep is one of the most important things needed for the recovery of our muscles after being broken down by either strenuous activities or weight lifting. 5 HTP may help with the release of stress, as well as help make you relax. This is a direct result of increased serotonin levels. (Prozac is also used to increase serotonin levels.)

There are several ways to take 5 HTP depending on what reason you are taking it.
• If you are trying to relieve depression or suppress your appetite for food and foods high in sugar, it is suggested that you take 50 to 300 mg per day, 20 minutes before meals. (3 times daily)
• You may also try combining 5 HTP with St. John’s Wort to help increase its antidepressant effects or a caffeine-containing beverage like coffee or green tea for increased appetite suppression.
• If you are using it to help with improving the quality of sleep, it is recommended that you take 50 to 100mg, 30 minutes before you sleep.

A person first trying 5 HTP should start with using 50mg and move up from there depending on how it affects you.

You can find 5 HTP from the seed pods of a West African plant known as Griffonia Simplicifolia. Small amounts can also be found in several vegetables such as tomatoes, avocados, plums, and bananas.
