Dyrenium

(Triamterene)

Dyrenium Description:
Dyrenium, a.k.a. triamterene, is a moderately potent oral diuretic used to treat excessive fluid accumulation and swelling (edema) caused by heart failure, cirrhosis, chronic kidney failure, corticosteroid medications, and nephrotic syndrome. It is also used alone or in conjunction with other blood pressure lowering medications to treat hypertension, i.e. high blood pressure.

Dyrenium can be used to treat excessive aldosterone (a hormone produced by the adrenal glands to help regulate your bodys salt and water balance) induced edema. It can be taken by itself or in conjunction with other diuretics to enhance their effects, and to incorporate its potassium-sparing property.

Dyrenium Form:
Prepared for oral administration, each capsule (opaque red cap and body) contains Triamterene USP dosed at 50 and 100 mg, and is imprinted in capital letters with the product name DYRENIUM and the strength (mg dosage).

Dyrenium Indications/Purpose:
For bodybuilding/athletic purposes Dyrenium is most often used to reduce subcutaneous water/fluid levels for the enhancement of muscular definition. After all the muscle building, dieting, and tweaking is completed bodybuilders polish their physiques for presentation by draining them of excess water. Although this is managed in a variety of ways, a major component is often the administration of diuretics and sometimes the necessary counterbalancing of electrolytes to prevent onstage cramping which can result from the physical demands of rigorous competitive posing (muscle tensing and flexing).

Dyrenium is also prominently used in athletic circles to meet weight requirements in sports such as boxing, wrestling, martial arts, etc., which maintain strict weight classes. By administering diuretics these athletes can literally dehydrate (lose substantial water weight) to make weigh-ins, only to rehydrate afterwards so they can compete at much heavier weights than their classes permit.

Dyreniums onset of action is 2-4 hours after ingestion, and in normal volunteers the mean peak serum levels of 30 ng/mL were reached at the 3-hour mark. However, its maximum effect may not be realized for several days. The duration of its effect depend upon several factors central to which is renal function, but it generally tapers off 7-9 hours after administration requiring subsequent doses for continuation.

The recommended dosage for hypertension patient treatment is 100 mg twice daily after meals (at least 8 hours apart) for a total of 200 mg per day. Bodybuilder/athlete dosing is the same, but should not exceed the maximum 300 mg/day total. Although Dyrenium is often used as a stand-alone drug, many bodybuilders stack/add it to other stronger diuretics like furosemide or hydrocholrhiazide for even greater effects.

Dyrenium Side Effects:
As with all medications, the possibility of side effects exists. Dyreniums potential side effects are similar to those of related diuretics such as Esidrix, Ezide, HydroDIURIL, Microzide and Oretic. You should seek immediate emergency medical assistance if you have any of these allergic reaction signs: swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat; hives or difficulty breathing. Less emergent side effects for which you should stop using Dyrenium, and may want to contact a medical professional include: numbness or tingly feeling
  • muscle pain or weakness
  • slow, fast, or uneven heartbeat
  • fatigue, drowsiness, restless, or light-headedness
  • less than usual urination, or lack of urination
  • shallow breathing
  • tremors or confusion
  • nausea, stomach pain, or vomiting
  • low fever or loss of appetite
  • diarrhea, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)

It should also be noted that even though this list seems rather extensive, Dyrenium is considered a safe diuretic. The manufacturer cites such hazardous complications as having occurred in a mere 1 in 1000 or less users.

Additional Dyrenium Information
Dyrenium, and triamterene in general, is widely available and can often be found already stacked in multi-ingredient products. Dyreniums solid effectiveness, high availability, low cost, and reputation for safety makes it a popular choice among athletes throughout the world.
