Steroid Demonization and Criminalization in Ireland
[August 6th, 2008] by Millard BakerIreland’s Evening Herald Newspaper proves that steroid hysteria is not uniquely an American phenomenon. Dr. Pat Troy, an alleged steroid expert, was quoted by the Dublin-based paper in a story identifying the dangerous side effects of anabolic steroids (”Doctor warns gym users on dire effects of steroid abuse,” August 5).
Dr Pat Troy, a Dublin-based drugs expert, said that anabolic steroids can cause liver disease, as well as infertility, high blood pressure and acne…
“They become addicted to the image and it will become a drug they have to have. They get a bit more power, extra energy and more aggression,” Dr Troy told the Irish Medical News.
Of course, he overstates and exaggerates the side effects with claims of steroid-related liver disease and aggression.
The Evening Herald also reports that the National Medicines Information Centre (NMIC) is lobbying for legislation to further criminalize the use and possession of anabolic steroids in Ireland. The NMIC is a part of Dublin’s largest university-based teaching hospital - St. James Hospital.
