“Steroids Are Great” Message Promoted in Steroid Shockumentary
[September 21st, 2008] by Millard Baker
The 7th episode of “Steroids Saved My Life” is now available online. “Steroids are great” according to the characters in the internet series. Filmmakers Nenad Barjaktarovic and Shane Smith created the 12-week internet “shockumentary” chronicling the wonderful benefits of steroids. First-time steroid user Peter Brown attempts to transform his ectomorphic physique by using anabolic steroids. The internet “reality series” debuted in August 2008.
Most steroid “shockumentaries” tend to demonize anabolic steroids with overstated and dubious side effects attributed to the drugs. These documentaries inform viewers that “steroids will kill you” or “steroids will make you crazy” or “steroids will scar you for life” using a “steroids are evil” or “reefer madness” type methodology.
“Steroid Saved My Life” takes a refreshingly different approach; it exploits and antagonizes the contemporary public hysteria regarding anabolic steroids. It attempts to shock viewers with Peter Brown unabashed use of steroids to transform his physique and his life. The fact that steroids have the potential to be safely used to gain muscle mass as well as many other positive side effects is heresy in politically correct discussions of steroids.
