Jose Canseco Charged with Misdemeanor for Smuggling HCG Across Mexican Border
[October 14th, 2008] by Millard BakerJose Canseco was stopped while crossing the international border at San Ysidro with his girlfriend Heidi Northcutt and her 7-year old daughter. Customs searched Canseco’s car and discovered a bottle of HCG obtained from a Mexican pharmacy. Jose Canseco was detained for 9 hours and released after he consented to a search of his house in the Los Angeles area.
Canseco was charged with “one count of introducing a mislabeled drug into interstate commerce” in federal court today but did not enter a plea.
Canseco was detained at the international border at San Ysidro Thursday by immigration officials who found him with a fertility drug obtained in Mexico. The drug, human chorionic gonadotropin, is illegal without a prescription.
Greg Emerson, Canseco’s lawyer, said outside of court that the mislabeling relates to the fact that the information on the bottle was in Spanish, not English.
Canseco, dapper in a light-colored suit with no tie, listened and said only “thank you” during the court appearance. The charge carries a maximum sentence of a year in prison and a $1,000 fine.
The author of the steroid tell-all book “Juiced” was apparently given “special consideration” by federal agents at the border.
