Baseball Crackheads Become Heroes But Steroid Users are Demonized Forever
[October 19th, 2008] by Millard BakerWhy are crackheads glorified as heroes and winners in professional sports but anabolic steroid users are demonized forever? Society’s treatment of baseball players who use cocaine compared to those who use steroids is hypocritical.
After eight stints in rehab, Hamilton was finally able to kick his addiction and return to baseball. While he may not have won the Home Run Derby crown, battling and defeating the monster of addiction makes him a winner. (emphasis added)
I am happy that MLB player Josh Hamilton’s addiction to alcohol and crack cocaine was treated as a medical problem and he was able to return to playing professional baseball after serving a three year suspension from the league. He wrote a book, “Beyond Belief,” detailing his crack addition, his numerous rehab visits, illnesses spitting up crack soot and wearing a wire for the DEA. Good for him.
Bloggers are sick of steroid use by baseball players but they inexplicably love following the career of a former crackhead!
But after all the crap we heard this year about the likes of Ankiel, Spezio, Bonds, etc.., following this young man’s season was one of my favorite things to do.
What I find “beyond belief” is that when productive players who use steroids are putting forth elite performances and setting records, this is bad and unforgivable.
But throwing a professional sports career away for a crack cocaine habit, spending $100,000 on crack in six weeks only to recover after three years and become a productive athlete putting forth elite performances and setting records is GOOD and ADMIRABLE.
Recovered crack-heads are GOOD.
Current and former steroid users are BAD… forever!
