Track Coach Trevor Graham - Prison or House Arrest?
[October 19th, 2008] by Millard BakerBALCO figure Trevor Graham, who was once an elite track coach to the greatest sprinters in the world, will be sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston on October 21. Federal prosecutors feel that Trevor Graham should go to prison for 10 months since he may have irreparably corrupted USA Track and Field by lying about his relationship with steroid dealer Angel Heredia.
“In the process, he played a key role in corrupting USA Track and Field to the extent that it may never recover from the damage he helped to inflict,” prosecutors said in a court filing.
Of course, that is the typical prosecutor trying to trump up the seriousness of lying about steroids to justify wasting so much money on the BALCO and related investigations/prosecutions.
Doesn’t anyone think the government is a little bit ungrateful to the whistleblower who sent the previously undetectable sample of THG in a syringe to USADA? If it weren’t for Trevor Graham, there would no BALCO; there would be no Victor Conte smiling at the cameras, there would be no Patrick Arnold in prison, no Marion Jones crying and being sent to jail for perjury, no Tim Montgomery dealing heroin to make a living and there would be one less reason to dislike Barry Bonds.
The government owes Trevor Graham for allowing them to waste a collossal amount of money on a steroid witch-hunt in elite sports.
Trevor Graham’s probation officer has recommended NO prison time suggesting six months house arrest instead. Of course, Graham’s attorney feels that community service is an appropriate sentence.
The only opinion that matters is that of Judge Susan Illston. Illston rejected the government’s ridiculous recommendation of prison for Tammy Thomas. It seems likely she could do the same for Trevor Graham and even Barry Bonds. It seems that Judge Illston has long been suspicious of the BALCO investigation and its star witness Jeff Novitsky.
