Bobsledders Use Anabolic Steroids Too
[October 22nd, 2008] by Millard BakerThe Swiss Bobsled Federation (SBSV) announced that two bobsledders have tested positive for high levels of testosterone (an anabolic steroid). Martin Galliker resigned from the team after both samples revealed an elevated testosterone:epitestosterone ratio.
Tommy Herzog also tested positive for doping with testosterone.
“The fact is, and this is the biggest blow for me, I’ve lost my job, which I loved more than anything else,” the 31-year-old Herzog, who won silver in two-man bob at the 2007 World Championships, said on his Web site.
Herzog and Galliker will take little comfort that some people dismiss participation in elite sports as not being a real job or career. For example, Phoenix Police Commander Kim Humphrey thinks it’s ok to ban athletes from sports if they fail a drug test, but police departments should not necessarily do that since police officers have real jobs.
“It’s not like in a sport where you just say, ‘You can’t play anymore.’ This is a career. It’s their job.”
Herzog awaits the results of Sample B testing to learn if he will face a ban from bobsledding.
