Death of Canada’s Greatest Shot Putter Bishop Dolegiewicz and Steroids

[November 6th, 2008] by Millard Baker

The greatest shot putter in the history of Canadian sports recently died at the age of 55. Zbigniew ”Bishop” Dolegiewicz was a three-time Olympian for Canada. He recently died in Utah where he was a successful coach for Southern Utah University. He admitted to using anabolic steroids for a decade during his testimony at the Dubin Inquiry after which his shot put records were removed.

According to his website, some of Bish Dolegiewicz’ athletic achievements include:

As an Olympic Track and Field Athlete, and Worlds Strongest Man Competitor Bishop Dolegiewicz has successfully competed and coached athletes and teams to both national and international levels. As an athlete these were his best lifts. Bench press <605 lbs.> competition squat <800 lbs.> power clean <450 lbs.> dead lift <800 lbs.> overhead push press <530>.

Bish was a member of 3 Olympic Teams 1976, 1980, and 1984. Bish is most recognized as a National Coach with Canada’s Olympic Track and Field team having created the strength and conditioning programs for the Canadian Sprints and Throws Teams and having coached some of the best athletes in the world.

One former teammate suspected that anabolic steroids were connected to his death.

[Bruce] Pirnie said he had been pondering whether steroids had a role in Dolegiewicz’s health issues. “I would be very surprised if there wasn’t a connection,” he said.

Former Canadian discus champ Rob Gray was quick to point out the obvious when asked if steroid were responsible for his death.

Gray said, “I suspect it has got a lot more to do with that he was a 6-foot-6, 330-pound man who was probably overweight.”

The question of whether a history of steroid use contributed to Dolegiewicz is confounded by risk factors associated with his extreme bodyweight.

Bishop would be very upset if he knew that anyone would have thought that his death was due to steroid use! That is the farthest statement from the truth. And in no way, shape or form did steroids have any part to due with my husbands passing. It was actually a long series of events that I believe led to Bishs passing. Bish ended up needing a hip replacement due to a fall from a motorcycle earlier in life. When undergoing surgery the doctor stated that they could only measure for length and not for width and that the hip was too small when they went in for operation. They searched for a extended time for another hip and I believe that to be a possible cause for a massive blood clot in the opposite leg in the entire femoral vein. From that clot, the doctors put him on warfarin, a blood thinner. He was on warfarin for 3 years until in June of 2005, when he pulled a lower abdominal muscle from doing extra sit ups before the National Track and Field Championship meet that I was to compete in. Bish absolutely refused to go to the hospital at the time, in order for us to make it to California for the track meet. The end result was that he had so much bleeding in both legs that he nearly died at that time. From the hemorrhage, he was in severe pain for the next 3 years, his legs feeling like they were on fire and even the touch of wearing pants was painful. Bish continued to coach regardless of the pain even to his last day. Due to the severe nerve damage and what was diagnosed as neuropothy. Bish had blood clot problems in his legs. A blood clot from his legs ended up going to the lungs, which threw the right side of his heart into a fatal rhythm. Despite Bish's health problems he was a very fine physical specimen. At the age of 54, he was 6'5'' and weighed in at 300 lb.s with a 6 pack. His last year, at the age of 55, he did loose a bit of muscle due to pneumonia from Feb-April 08, but regardless was still very muscular.

too bad for him, why do they need to use so much steroid just to have a ody like that, dteroids have lots of bad effects specially if misused , yo can get back pain, spasms of muscles in neck or legs

Steroids are very harmful for body especially when taken for long period of time. But the athletes use them for energy enhancer but then suffer from side-effects.
