More Positive Doping Results from Beijing Olympics
[November 10th, 2008] by Millard BakerThe International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge announced that there may be a total of 15 positive doping cases arising from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Six athletes were disqualified during the Games; two additional athletes were disqualified based on retesting samples for CERA. Rogge believes there may be another 7 athletes who will be disqualified as a result of retesting for the previously undetectable blood boosting drug CERA. It does not appear that there will be any new steroid-related positives.
The majority of the positive results involved the use of erythropoeitin-type blood boosting drugs used by endurance athletes.
For those specifically following anabolic steroid use in sports, only two samples out of over 5,000 samples tested positive for anabolic steroids; a third athlete was disqualified during the Olympics based on a sample given prior to the Games. Ukrainian heptathlete Lyudmila Blonska, Ukrainian weightlifter Igor Razoronov and Greek hurdler Fani Halkia tested positive for methyltestosterone, nandrolone and methyltrienolone, respectively.
