WADA Believes Steroid Trafficking More Lucrative Than Heroin Trafficking
[January 17th, 2009] by Millard BakerDavid Howman, the director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), told attendees at the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) Anti-doping Symposium that anabolic steroid trafficking was more prevalent and more lucrative than the international heroin trade. Yet, when asked about supporting evidence for this assertion, Howman admitted in a bumbling response that there were no statistics and only opinions corroborated by “researchers” (”Steroids trafficking more prevalent than heroin - WADA exec,” January 15).
The trained barrister told the Observer there are no official statistics, but based his comments on anecdotal evidence gathered by WADA.
“It’s very difficult to have evidence on, because if it’s not illegal there is nobody gathering the statistics, but it’s been corroborated by researchers and we commissioned someone in Italy who formed a view that through the Internet and how it was being trafficked. The evidence is there.”
WADA continues their attempts to demonize anabolic steroids even resorting to ridiculous, unsupported statements to convince people of the evils of steroids.
