First-time steroid user Peter Brown celebrates “getting the girl” nine weeks into a steroid cycle that includes Dianabol on Episode 9 of ”Steroids Saved My Life.” It is clearly politically incorrect to discuss the benefits of anabolic steroids especially when the positive aspects of anabolic steroid use are completely unrelated to medical or therapeutic use; the only acceptable portrayal of steroid use relay a message consistent with anti-steroid propaganda. The internet reality series “Steroids Saved My Life” has exploited this taboo in a shockumentary celebrating the numerous positive outcomes experienced by first-time steroid user Peter Brown.
“Getting the girl” was one of the explicit reasons for using anabolic steroids listed by Peter at the very beginning of his cycle. After gaining approximately 25 lbs and much additional confidence, Peter succeeded and “got the girl.” Peter Brown’s motivations for steroid use have been criticized and the reality of his steroid use has been questioned. But Peter Brown and director Nenad Barjaktarovic assure viewers that the steroid use is real.
Improving one’s physical appearance and increasing the odds of a romantic/sexual interaction is a strong motivator of anabolic steroid use. The media generally focuses on the use of anabolic steroids for performance enhancing purposes in sports. But this respresents a small minority of steroid users.
The anecdotal evidence suggests that using anabolic steroids to “get the girl” is an effective strategy to some degree. Society values muscular and athletic physiques. “Steroids Saved My Life” is an internet reality series that, in many ways, celebrates the positive aspects of anabolic steroid use. On the surface, this would appear to be something for which steroid users on various bodybuilding forums would be supportive. Instead, steroid users have been critical of the shockumentary format and critical of first-time steroid user Peter Brown. The criticisms range from suggestions that the purported steroid use by Peter is being faked to criticisms that Peter is not using steroids correctly to criticims that Peter is “too skinny” to start using steroids.
I have asked Nenad Barjaktarovic, the director of “Steroids Saved My Life,” about the reaction seen on various bodybuilding forums. He took the time to respond and clarifiy the goals of the video project.

Most steroid “shockumentaries” tend to demonize anabolic steroids with overstated and dubious side effects attributed to the drugs. These documentaries inform viewers that “steroids will kill you” or “steroids will make you crazy” or “steroids will scar you for life” using a “steroids are evil” or “reefer madness” type methodology.
