Did Mickey Rourke Use Steroids for Movie Role in “The Wrestler”?

[January 12th, 2009] by Millard Baker

Actor Mickey Rourke was asked in an interview by Men’s Health whether he used anabolic steroids to help transform his physique for the role of a professional wrestler in the highly acclaimed movie “The Wrestler.” Rourke deftly avoided answering the question but also did not deny the use of steroids (”Rourke’s Oscar Hopes Take One Step Forward with Globes Win, One Step Back with Steroid Rumors,” January 12).

But could talk that he might have used steroids to get into shape for his turn in The Wrestler be the Oscar equivalent of an October surprise? [...]

According the New York Daily News, in an upcoming interview of Men’s Journal Rourke is asked if he used steroids to get into pro-wrestler shape. He doesn’t deny it, and only says, “When I’m a wrestler, I behave like a wrestler.”

It is not news that actors use steroids to improve their physical appearance for movie and television rules. The real news is that the media is ready to make an issue out of it. Representative Henry Waxman has already moved past Congressional interest in sports and doping; now he appears ready to tackle the issue of steroids in the entertainment industry with a brand new witch-hunt.

Stay tuned for more absurdity to see if Congress calls upon Hollywood to implement steroid testing for actors.

WWE Wrestler Charlie Haas Discusses His Steroid Use

[December 2nd, 2008] by Millard Baker

WWE wrestler Charlie Haas publicly discussed his use of anabolic steroids but maintains that he thought he was legally using the drugs since he had a doctor’s prescription. Sports Illustrated named Haas as one of 10 WWE wrestlers who obtained steroids from a compounding pharmacy (”Charlie Haas on His Past Steroid Use,” November 29).

Haas was allegedly prescribed anastrozole (used to ward off breast tissue following a steroid cycle), somatropin (Growth hormone), stanozolol (anabolic steroid), nandrolone (anabolic steroid), and chorionic gonadotropin (protein hormones) between August 2006 and January 2007. Haas claims he thought it was legal, and he was doing it for “maintenance” after he had both his knees reconstructed.

Charlie Haas now believes he made a mistake and steroid use is wrong and kids shouldn’t take steroids. … Read the rest of this entry »

Steroid Hysteria Demonizes Physician Researching Concussions in Pro Wrestling

[August 4th, 2008] by Millard Baker

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) recently announced the appointment of Dr. Joseph Maroon as the Medical Director for the WWE Talent Wellness Program. Dr. Maroon is a leading neurosurgeon who along with his colleague neuropsychologist Mark Lovell, PhD. have created the most advanced and sophisticated post-concussion assessment program [ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing)].

The WWE’s acknowledgement and recognition of the significance of concussions in professional wrestling should be commended. Repeated concussions have been shown to lead to a form of brain damage known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). Post-mortem examinations of deceased wrestler Chris Benoit by the Sports Legacy Institute confirmed CTE in all regions of Benoit’s brain.

Unfortunately, sports writers continue to promote steroid hysteria in sport by demonizing physicians who work with athletes/entertainers in professional sports where anabolic steroid use is prevalent. Mark Madden, sports correspondent with the Beaver County Times, characterized the news of Dr. Joseph Maroon’s role with the WWE as an adviser who may help cover up steroid use in the WWE. … Read the rest of this entry »
