The fight against steroid use

The fight against steroid use, By: Jola Szubielski

April 14, 2006

Ernest Remillard's 13-year-old son plays junior varsity baseball. Even at his young age, the reality of steroid use is hitting home.

"I think that Major Leaguers taking steroids and them seeing it on the news all the time, it kind of scares you that your children, my child would end up doing the same thing to try to make it to the Major Leagues," said Remillard.

That's exactly what Congressman John Sweeney of Clifton Park is fighting. He sent a letter to the commissioner asking the league to take responsibility. He wants the league to continue the investigation of Barry Bonds and other players for their alleged drug use.

"He has his role models, and unfortunately Barry Bonds is one of them. He can be his role model, but hopefully he knows better than to take steroids," said Remillard.

Sweeney also wants MLB to implement educational programs for young children, teaching them about the dangers of steroid use,
and he wants the programs to start with 5th graders.

"Since late 80s when steroids became big in Major League Baseball, they've ignored the problem. Is it time for them to alter what they've done in the past? If you're going to reach that many kids with your baseball cards, fantasy leagues, you have a responsibility to make sure that message is clear," said Bethlehem Babe Ruth President Tim Bruculere.

While some parents and coaches said starting education programs is a good idea, they said the real education should start at home.

"I think it's a great idea, but I don't think the coaches are with them enough that I think it's the parents' job, not the coaches," said Remillard.

Bruculere said, "It really boils down to making the parents aware of what's going on, what you're hearing, what types of things they should be discussing."

Under Sweeney's plan, the MLB would put $12 million toward setting up a nationwide program for kids. In the meantime, Sweeney hopes testing policies and stricter penalties will send the right message
