Study: Steroids Make Teens Aggressive For Years

Study: Steroids Make Teens Aggressive For Years

Researchers Say Characteristics Last Beyond Steroid Use

February 27, 2006, Internet Broadcasting Systems, Inc.

A new study indicates teens who take steroids may have an aggressive personality for years, even if they stop taking the drug.
Researchers looked at how hamsters on steroids reacted to a new cage mate. Animals on steroids were 10 times more aggressive than those not on the drugs -- and they remained aggressive for two weeks after taken off steroids.
According to the study, the aggressiveness lasted two weeks after the animals were taken off the drug, which is equivalent to about two human years.
Researchers identified another risk, saying the drugs can also cause permanent brain damage.
They said withdrawal from steroids can also lead to depression. The effect of steroids can last well into adult years.
