Plano West baseball player Taylor Hooton used steroids to enhance his performance before he committed suicide in July 2003.
His father, Don Hooton, established the Taylor Hooton Foundation (www.taylorhooton.org) to fight steroid abuse.
Now both the Texas House and Senate have passed the state’s first random testing program for anabolic steroid abuse among Texas high school athletes.
Both bills are modest in scope. They call for $2 million to $4 million for the program that will actually test only a small percentage of all student athletes.
Nothing prevents school districts from enlarging the program. Education about the dangers of steroid use should be part of program.
