Steroid policy to be aired

Steroid policy to be aired, By: Shawn D. Lewis

CLAWSON -- Superintendent Jim Nolan says he has not seen evidence of steroid use in his district, but he wants to make sure it stays that way.

The Clawson School District Board of Education will meet at Monday in the Baker Administrative Offices, 626 Phillips.

One of the agenda items will be a first reading of a board policy regarding performance-enhancing substances.

"We all know about the problem of steroid use among superstars, professional wrestlers and others, and we want to make sure students don't start taking them in high school," said Nolan.

To that end, the Michigan Legislature enacted a law on June 26 regarding the use of performance-enhancing substances in interscholastic athletics.

The new law says a school board must ensure that its policies state that using these drugs will jeopardize students' eligibility to play.

It also includes penalties including a loss of eligibility for 30 calendar days for a first offense, 60 days for a second offense and 180 days for a third offense.

"The Michigan Association of School Boards came up with a sample policy, and the board will review it, and can either make changes or adopt them as they stand," said Nolan.

"On Monday, during the board meeting, we will have the first reading and discussion."
