Preventing Steroid Use in High School

Preventing Steroid Use in High School, By: Jessica Aspiras

According to the Partners for Substance Abuse and Prevention, steroid use among high school students has increased by 50 percent in the last 25 years. And the National Institute for Drug Abuse says about three percent of high school seniors have tried the drug at least one time in their life.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association played host to more than 50 high school coaches and administrators from around the state on Thursday. The event, funded by Sports Illustrated, was a training session for ATLAS or Athletes Training and Learning to Avoid Steroids.

Four high schools in Michigan, however none in the Lansing area, were chosen to be model high schools. They include Ironwood L.L. Wright High School, Macomb Lutheran North High School, Mt. Pleasant High School, and Spring Lake High School. The schools will receive about $25,000 worth of workbooks, manual, and guides to use for drug prevention and health promotion.
