Lawmakers granted final approval to a bill barring coaches from recommending steroids or other performance-enhancing supplements to student athletes.
Senate Bill 517, sponsored by Senate President Peter Courtney, D-Salem, passed the House 50-9 and now goes to the governor’s desk.
“We need to change the ‘win at all costs’ culture that exists among many of our children,” Courtney stated in a prepared release. “This is a strong first step in that direction.”
The bill was endorsed by the Oregon School Activities Association.
“Our coaches are not medical experts and this bill will ensure that they are not involved in recommending or supplying any type of food supplements to students,” said Tom Welter, executive director of the OSAA.
