UFC Lightweight Sage Northcutt's Father was a Steroid- and Cocaine-Dealing Bodybuilder Turned Government Snitch

UFC Lightweight Sage Northcutt's Father was a Steroid- and Cocaine-Dealing Bodybuilder Turned Government Snitch

UFC lightweight Sage Northcutt is only 19-years old. He is one of the youngest athletes to sign a UFC contract. The very talented mixed martial arts (MMA) phenom has a perfect 6-0 record in his short professional MMA career. “Super Sage” seems to be well on his way to becoming the UFC's newest golden boy. What could possibly go wrong?

For starters, Super Sage's physique may look a little too polished. He looks like he just stepped off the stage of a National Physique Committee (NPC) bodybuilding contest. In fact, Super Sage is the 2013 NPC Texas State Teenage Men's Physique champion. Unfortunately, it's no secret that steroid use is rampant in the NPC.

Super Sage has never failed an anti-doping test but that doesn't mean Jeff Novitzky, the UFC's chief steroid hunter, isn't going to be suspicious of Super Sage's physique. He may target the young Northcutt in an attempt to catch him using one of the dozens of steroids and performance-enhancing drugs banned by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Will Super Sage pass Novitzky's “smell test”? Does Northcutt's NPC experimentation mean he will be subjected to more drug testing than usual?

Novitzky will certainly take into account the fact that Super Sage's father-manager was a former anabolic steroid and cocaine dealing bodybuilder turned government snitch. Before the birth of Super Sage, Mark Monroe Northcutt was known as a distributor of anabolic steroids at gyms around the State of Texas during the late 1980s. He was also a cocaine dealer who got busted with a huge stash of cocaine in San Marcos.

In 1989, the elder Northcutt was indicted by a federal grand jury in Texas for the possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute. Northcutt decided to make a deal with government prosecutors and became a confidential informant. He agreed to help set up and bring down several other government targets in exchange for more favorable and lenient treatment from the criminal justice system.

Northcutt's cooperation helped put several people in prison. One of those targets was John Michael Wilson, a famed prosecutor who later switched sides and became a defense attorney representing clients who were mostly drug dealers. Wilson was a well-liked and popular attorney who was involved in the obscenity case involving pornographic movies such as “Debbie Does Dallas” during his time with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office.

Northcutt put his drug dealing days behind him and focused on his family with the birth of Sage Northcutt in 1996. Northcutt started training Sage to excel in combat sports such as karate and kickboxing from as early as the age of four. By the age of 9, Sage became the youngest person ever to appear on the cover of Sport Karate Magazine. Sage's success is largely due to the dedication of his father to his son's training.

At the same time, if anyone is looking to find a way to question the accomplishments of Super Sage, they will undoubtedly point to his father's history with steroids and bodybuilding as a reason to remain suspicious of Sage's accomplishments.

Sage Northcutt is scheduled to fight Cody Pfister at UFC Fight Night 80 on December 10, 2015,
